SECTION 2 : INTRODUCTION
------------------------
The DJS Utilities I package is a collection of five uncommon DOS
programs. DJS Log Version 2.2 keeps a log in a text file of the
dates and times your PC is booted. You have the option of using
the password protection feature, which records the dates and times
of false password entries. The log entries are written in readable
formats. DJS Alert Version 1.2 will display any amount of reminders
when you boot your machine. DJS Destroy Version 1.0 will delete a
file, removing the possiblities of that file being undeleted. The
content of the file is erased before the file is deleted, allowing
you to delete private/personal files without undeletion as an
option to another user. DJS CommandMaster Version 1.2 executes
commands on certain dates, which is useful for periodical virus
scans or system backups. DJS View Version 2.1 will display a text
file in color screens, a replacement to the TYPE command in DOS.
The unique aspect of this program is that it displays page break
codes which sometimes cause confusion when viewing text files.
All of the programs in this package were originally written in 1992
to 1993, and most of this documentation is just a compilation of the
separate user guides for each program.
SECTION 3 : DJS LOG VERSION 2.2
-------------------------------
DJS Log Version 2.2 is a DOS command line utility that keeps
track of the date and time of each instance that you boot
off of a certain diskette or hard disk.
The records of each boot are kept in a file called LOG.TXT.
This version of DJS Log has an included password protection
feature which is accessed by a command line switch.
DJS Log should run on any IBM PC compatible system. However,
there are a few system requirements that would be advised for
the maximum performance of this program :
* At least 640K RAM
* Hard disk drive (Not required, but program is most effective
when one is used)
Along with the above requirements, there are others that MUST
be fulfilled in order for the program to operate correctly :
* You must keep all of the DJS Log program files on the same
directory. (LOG.EXE, LOG.INI)
* Do not attempt to include LOG.EXE in your AUTOEXEC.BAT path
statement.
* Do not tamper or edit the LOG.INI file. In some cases, it may
cause your system to hang.
* Write down your password at all times. If you forget your
password, use a floppy diskette to boot your system and then
change the LOG.INI file using LOG PSET.
DJS Log has one command line option that is used to set the
password feature to ON/OFF and to change or create the actual
password itself. The information about the password and the
password feature's status is stored in the LOG.INI file. This
is why LOG.EXE must be on the same directory as LOG.INI.
To change the settings in the INI file, type LOG PSET and press
<ENTER>. The "DJS Log Version 2.2 Settings" screen should
appear. There are instructions on the screen regarding option
changing and so forth.
You may get the impression that DJS Log is a DOS utility that
can be put in a directory like C:\DOS or C:\UTILITY where the
AUTOEXEC.BAT PATH statement can make it all-accessible. This
can, but should not be done.
If you have the LOG.EXE and LOG.INI file stored on a directory
called C:\UTILITY and you are currently in another directory,
you can type LOG and the program will execute. The problem is
that LOG.INI is not stored in the directory you are currently
in. Also, a new LOG.TXT file will be opened in the current
directory as well.
The intended way in which Log is to be used is through the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file when your system first boots. This way an
automatic record is added to LOG.TXT every time AUTOEXEC.BAT
runs. You should create a subdirectory on your hard disk or
floppy boot disk called LOG and copy LOG.EXE and LOG.INI to
this directory. Then you must add two lines in any area of
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file :
CD LOG
LOG
This switches the directory to LOG and executes the program
so that it will be able to access the LOG.INI file. You may
also store LOG.EXE, LOG.INI, and LOG.TXT on the root directory
of your boot disk. Where Log runs there will be a LOG.TXT
file. In the above example, LOG.TXT is in the LOG directory.
As long as LOG.EXE and LOG.INI are in the same current directory
at the same time, everything should work.
Important Note : DJS Log has been designed to create a new LOG.INI
file if it cannot find one. The password stored in this file is
DJSWARE (case sensitive)
SECTION 4 : DJS ALERT VERSION 1.2
---------------------------------
This program will display a reminder or a series of reminders or
messages on your screen when you boot your computer. If you conduct
a lot of operations on your PC each day, this program will be handy
in making sure that you remember what you need to do.
Alert will not work correctly unless the ALERT.DAT file is located in
the same directory as the program. It is always best to keep the
program and its data file on the root directory of your hard disk
drive or the floppy boot diskette.
There is a certain format for the information in the ALERT.DAT file.
You can create this file yourself or use the "A" command line option.
Below is an example of a correctly written data file :
*
05-17-1993
Angela's birthday is in 3 more days. Start shopping.
*
05-20-1993
Angela's birthday is today.
Make reservations for dinner tonight.
*
06-05-1993
Speech on new production plan at 10:30.
Call Greg Cafery tonight at 8:00.
Each record is separated by a "*". A * marks the beginning of a new
record. When the program reads a * from the data file, it then
checks the date. The above format is exactly how to your data file
should be arranged.
When you use the "A" command line option, this is all done
automatically. You need only to tell the program the needed
information, and the data file will be modified.
A menu will appear at the top left of your screen when you type ALERT
A at the command prompt. There are three options on the menu. The
first option is used to modify the already existing data file on the
DEFAULT DIRECTORY. The second option is used to wipe out the
existing data file and create a new one. The third option is used to
exit the menu when you are finished.
Since this is a new program, you will have to create your own data
file. Use option 2 to create a new data file. Then use option 1 to
add information to the file. When the program asks for a date, enter
a date in the XX-XX-XXXX form. The program will then ask for an
event to attach to this date. Enter as many events as you wish, but
do not type past the end of the screen, or the information will be
distorted. If you enter more than 19 events for one day, the screen
will keep scrolling the information without stopping on that date.
It is best to keep the reminders short and keep an eye on how many
you add to one date.
When using DJS Alert with your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you should make
sure that the program directory and the ALERT command are added.
EXAMPLE :
---------
CD ALERT
ALERT
SECTION 5 : DJS DESTROY VERSION 1.0
-----------------------------------
Destroy is a file deletion utility that will prevent you or anyone
else from undeleting files from your disks. If you have files that
you don't want other people to have access to at all, then Destroy
is a useful program.
Destroy is a big replacement for the DOS "del" command. Instead of
simply removing the file name from the directory, Destroy will wipe
out the contents of the file and then remove the file's name from the
directory.
Suppose you write employee records on your computer, and you delete
those records. Anyone else who uses your computer can undelete those
records and view them as if you never did anything. With Destroy,
someone could undelete the record, but there would be nothing in the
file to read.
The correct format for the program is DESTROY {Filename to destroy}
SECTION 6 : DJS VIEW VERSION 2.0
--------------------------------
DJS View is a relatively simple program. By typing VIEW followed
by the path and/or the name of the file to view, the file's content
will be displayed on the screen. You can scroll to the next page of
the file by pressing any key. The program is terminated by pressing
the ESC key.
File viewing programs are common, but one thing that makes DJS View
unique is that all page break character codes are displayed by a
message indicating a break. Character codes sometimes make ASCII
files look sloppy, so this added feature is nice.
SECTION 7 : DJS COMMANDMASTER VERSION 1.2
-----------------------------------------
The DJS CommandMaster is a DOS Utility that will execute commands on
certain dates. The user will have to enter the dates and commands
that will be executed. This program is handy for monthly virus scans
and other operations.
The CM.EXE file is the executable program itself. This program will
not work correctly unless it can read information from a data file
called CM.CMD. This file contains information on what commands to
execute and on what dates.
The CM.CMD data file is in ASCII format and should be arranged in the
exact form shown below :
*
05-13-1992
c:\virus\scan /g/h/j
c:\menu\menu
*
06-13-1992
c:\virus\scan /g/h/j
c:\menu\menu
As you may notice, there is an exact pattern that each record in the
data file must be arranged in. To begin a new date, you must first
use an *. This symbol tells the program that a new record is
beginning. Next you would enter a SPACE and then the date you want
the command to be executed. The date must be in the MM/DD/YYYY form.
After the date, you can enter as many commands as you please as long
as they are preceeded by a double space in the line. Notice how the
information is in somewhat of an outline form.
Typing this information can be time consuming and full of errors.
Because of this, CommandMaster is armed with a built in data entry
menu. To use this menu, type CM A at the DOS prompt. A menu will
appear on the screen and give you a set of options to use on the
CM.CMD data file. This is a much easier approach to entering a
command record.
To remove a record from the command file, you can edit the file using
a text editor.
SECTION 8 : TECHNICAL GUIDELINES
--------------------------------
All of these programs have been tested on an AST Premium 286 running
at 10MHZ with 1MB RAM.
To avoid hardware difficulties, you should use this program only if
your computer is configured as follows :
- IBM PC compatible
- 286 or higher processor
- At least 640K RAM
SECTION 9 : SHAREWARE REGISTRATION
----------------------------------
The DJS Utilities I package is distributed as "Shareware", meaning
that you may try all of the programs before buying them. You may
use the programs for an evaluation period of 10 days.
You will notice that all of these programs display a logo and a
registration reminder before they actually perform their assigned
functions. This is not meant to "force" people to register with
DJS Software. You must remember that you are using evaluation
copies of the original programs, and if you would like to purchase
them you may do so by :
- Printing the order form file DJSUTIL.FRM
- Filling out all of the spaces with the correct information
- Sending the completed order form along with the correct payment
